Domestic Violence
Get Help Now
If there is current domestic violence in your relationship, consisting of either physical or emotional abuse, then couples counseling is not recommended. As couples begin to express their emotions honestly and openly in counseling sessions, it can lead to a short term increase in tension. If either or both people cope with that stress in unsafe ways, then it is important to learn better coping skills first. Individual therapy to build positive coping skills is needed. For many perpetrators of domestic violence, a long term program to help them understand and change their behaviors is necessary. If you are the victim of abuse, it is important to take steps to keep yourself safe immediately.
